The disadvantage of large icicles is that they are difficult to hold. By nailing a handle, they become both easier to hold and more exciting. Inspires good role play.
Looking after an ice sword is a nice task for those who need to practice being careful with things. We hunted ice ghosts for a little over two hours before all the swords were broken. Without a handle, an icicle usually survives for a maximum of five minutes.
