Riddle with things
Here is a language activity that makes children aware of rhymes. Find things that rhyme with each other, and put them in a big bag, or a box.
The children gather. The adult starts the activity by saying/reading a rule, a verse or a poem that is known to the children, which has some rhymes (the children are welcome to join in). Afterwards you talk about what rhymed in the verse. (Eg: Did you hear that trolls rhymed with twelve. TROLL - TWELVE!) Get the children to repeat and say the rhymes repeatedly in unison, and feel free to bring out more examples from the verse.
Attention is then directed to the things that the adult has in the bag. Take out a few things at a time. Together you will find out what rhymes. E.g. rhymes sock with lid, and comb with lamb.
You name and listen, find rhyming pairs and put the pairs together. As you have found all the pairs, the rhyming pairs are repeated once more. Maybe together you can make a verse or a rule with some of these rhymes.
Suggestions for other items you can use as rhyme pairs:
screw - cap
book - hook
(duplo-)is - pig
(dart-)arrow - car
cat - hat
sheep - rope
flag - peg
bottle - mask
I am attaching a file with three language toys intended for assembly, language groups or other language activities in the kindergarten. Hope it can be of use to more people. ??
